Dressing without thinking

Common problem: I’m exhausted (or have a headache, had a terrible day, only want to crawl into PJs and watch HGTV, etc.) and it’s time to go out and be social. In my world, this is the exact formula that leads to the “I have nothing to wear!” panic, which is then followed by the terribly common “I don’t want to go!” solution.

For the sake of my relationship– sorry, sweetie, for all the yelling at my wardrobe– I had to come up with a solution: the default going-out outfit.

Above we see an image taken around 7 p.m. last night. I had an incredibly busy day at work earlier and was exhausted. We went to the dog park and realized the 50+ degree temperature was no fun when it plummeted after sunset and the wind started, so I had an awful cold-ear induced headache. I was starving. I was freezing. I was incredibly annoyed with everything. And it was time to go out for dinner and drinks with our dear friends, Sara and Josh, at the Schlafly Tap Room.

Thank you, default going-out outfit for saving the evening. Or at least my sanity, momentarily.

My default going-out outfit is comprised of a cotton moto jacket, a loose crop top, a high-waisted stretchy pencil skirt, black tights and black boots + a structured handbag, a long necklace and a few bangles. I can put it on without thinking and I always like how I look while wearing it.

Outfit Anatomy: Pencil Skirts + Moto Jackets

Since I buy the majority of my clothing in muted colors– it looks better with this pale skin/red hair thing I have going on– they tend to all match. This means I actually have a few versions of this outfit, such as a light crop top, a black moto jacket, an evergreen skirt and charcoal tights. If one item is dirty, I still always have an outfit I can throw on while in autopilot. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s one of the big reasons this is such a good pic for a no-thinking look.

I’m feeling inspired to come up with more defaults, like a default packed lunch or homecooked dinner, a default workday outfit and hairdo. The possibilities…

What do you have go-to’s for? What’s your favorite go-to outfit?
